![]() To quote one of the online bios for Boy in Static: "There are a thousand reasons to establish a band. And probably a thousand reasons not to. For example, regularly setting the alarm for three in the morning, getting up, making music for an hour, and going back to bed. And the next morning during daylight, checking to see whether it was all a dream or reality." I have no idea how true that true that statement is, but damn if it doesn't strike in just the right fashion. The first Boy in Static song I listened to, Bellyfull, hit me in a similar way. I wasn't blown away by the genius of it, but it managed to be awesome in a very particular fashion that I couldn't help but enjoy. It took some doing to get my hands on an actual physical copy of the album that Bellyfull is from, Newborn, which happens to be Boy in Static's debut from 2004. Shoegaze is the most dominant style present in Boy in Static's music, but there are touches of electronic, drone, and ambient. The drums are often intentionally low-fi, as are many of the elements, really, all of them fuzzed out and blending together into a pleasant wash of noise. Newborn is fairly restrained; there's no aggressive distortion or harsh, disonant blasts of sound. The tone is accurately set by Bellyfull, which is both the opener and the highlight of the album. It's solid throughout, with the closing track, Slept Fine, and its trembling violins being another highlight. There's very little to dislike about Newborn, really, and if you're into the kind of shoegaze that Boy in Static provides, it's a solid purchase. In my estimation, it's just about worth it for Bellyfull alone, but the presence of nine other worthwhile tracks only helps. |
