I've been a fan of Belle and Sebastian for a while now, ever since their second album, If You're Feeling Sinister. For a little bit of background for you uncultured bastards, B&S is currently a 7 person group that I think of more indie than their labeled "twee pop". They have a queer sound, it's hard to describe. They mainly focus on vocals and then back up songs with oddities: tambourines, keyboards, trumpets, bass, violin, piano, yaddayadda. Not really pop, not close to rock. Indie is a blanket term. One track popped right out when I went through their latest album. The first I swear I've heard before: For the Price of a Cup of Tea. It's something to wake up to in the morning. They interweave their vocals, making for a sweet harmony. Extremely catchy, playing it over and over again. Close, loveable runner ups are Sukie in the Graveyard, which has quirky lyrics and very diggable electronica tunes; and Mornington Crescent, one of their few slower songs. Crescent is one of those so relaxing songs that you need to hear on a calm, rainy day. Gives me a =3 feeling. But don't get me wrong, their other songs are not filler. Few are the same, in any way, including instruments. Most are faster, catchy, and like few other artists you've heard before. If this CD is too pricey for you, try looking for one of their earlier creations and see if you dig it. |
